I have a confession.
I have been bit by the knitting-pattern-writing bug! (Let’s pause for excitement: WOOOOO YEAHH OH my. SO EXCITED TO WRITE PATTERNNS!) …Ok, that’s enough.
But really, I never thought I’d get to a place in knitting where I would actually be sharing my ideas and patterns with others!
Of course, none of this would have been possible without the help of a group on Ravelry, Free Pattern Testers, and my side business of selling my original hand knits – aersyarns.
Background: Just over a year ago, I finally decided to offer my hand knit items for sale, advertising them on a Facebook page and on a website. Being quite conscious of copyrights on knitting patterns, I knew it’d be easiest if I designed all items that I would sell, thereby avoiding any copyright issues. And then I could call everything my own “original designs”! Although I am confident as a knitter, it was (still is!) my first time writing patterns and designing wearable accessories. For now, my items are small – I am not quite up to the sweater level. (Hey, small things are quicker to knit, too – right?)
So here (there?) I was, sitting (sweating?) this summer, realizing that hand knits would not be in high demand all year. I took that as a challenge, and came up with a couple items suitable for warmer months. But then I realized – I could share the actual patterns (and maybe make some $?) by selling / offering them on Ravelry! Thus, I am slowly turning my original designs into original patterns.
Now after my first pattern, the Hootenanny Band, I have two more!

The second, and FREE (yes, free!), pattern is another slouch-style hat knit in DK weight yarn (about 150 yards) and also on size US #7 needles.
